Dreamschool...

Co- Constructed learning days...
This is not a dream, it's an emerging reality.
Learning leaders and learners need to agree to self construct their school day from a range of recommended learning courses. Focused requirements for this open plan learning architecture can have all stakeholders as advisors to this design. Resiliency and elasticity will be needed.
A dream school...Open to learning environment, open to learning time table construction, open to learning conversations
1. One with flexibility options for the compulsory courses. They choose their start times, lunchtime slots and exit times....as long as they meet the course requirements of ( x ) contact hours required.
2. Subjects have team teachers so the same course is offered by a range of teachers...
3. This will appeal to senior students first...start earlier so they can leave earlier for sport or other commitments- or to ease traffic congestion start later and end later...more time for other things that require fresh minds and hearts earlier in the day.
4. The facilities are therefor used for longer periods of time and are  less congested as there is no particular time when all enrolled students are on site  at the same time.

At ECC we have had a taste of changes to the regular school timetable.
1. Late starts- two years of a late starts on a Wednesday...took some getting used to, now more than 98% of the secondary school manages really well. Some students still come very early for sport in the gym, some meet in the library for study times with other senior students, some use the time to socialise and this is all good. Other schools are doing this also.
2. Timetable choices- apart from subject options senior students were given opportunities to select from a range of extra 'subject  tutorials' to fill in the blanks on a chosen timetable...this idea was foreign to a generation that is familiar with 'only one subject teacher' delivering a learning course for the year. Now other voices are part of that year long subject. This is not new...electives at big conferences are doing this. Tertiary students get to choose the subject alloaction times that best suit them. They 'construct' their own timetable.
We have made a start to a min Flexi timetable...students have a sense of agency and enjoy their chosen time table. One year13 says period 5 on a Wednesday is her 'best because it is one she knows  that she really chose'.
3. Students do self reflection feedback to parents and caregivers from junior year levels...they show and tell as much as they can. The learning coach does not have to know it all. The learner leads the  conversation about their learning journey as much as possible.

A dream school will need a 'dream team' to realise this possibility for changing Educational landscapes...this is happening.
